Tow More with a Gooseneck Hitch
![]() |
One of the most common trailer hitches used for towing is the gooseneck hitch. Gooseneck hitches are intended for use on trucks only; never use one on a car. The purpose of a gooseneck hitch is to install a trailer's connection point in a central position on a truck bed. The gooseneck hitch is mounted on the underside of the truck bed for hidden hitches. Anyone planning to haul horse trailers, farm and industrial equipment, and even some types of fifth wheel trailer hitches will need a gooseneck trailer hitch. |
Tow More Weight with a Gooseneck Hitch
The gooseneck hitch is able to tow more gross weight and tongue weight (the amount of force pressing down on the hitch) than most other hitches because it is centrally mounted on the truck bed and supported by the truck's rear axle.
Consult the manufacturers' guides when selecting the correct gooseneck hitch. Prior to towing, you'll need to consult your vehicle owner's manual to find out the tow rate. You will also need to check the owner's manual for the trailer as well to find out the weight of the trailer. Owner's manuals for towing vehicles list a tow rating, including a maximum gross axle weight, telling you the maximum weight the axle can support. The type of gooseneck you will need depends on the type and weight of the trailer you are towing. It is important to never go over the weight limits found in the vehicle's and trailer's manufacturer manuals.
Easy Maintenance
You'll want to check all components of your gooseneck each and every time you tow something. This will ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road. All nuts and bolts should be in good shape and tightly secured. You will want to check the connection point between the hitch ball and the coupler as well. The hitch ball and coupler will need an occasional lubrication to permit optimal movement between the hitch ball and coupler.
As stated above, a gooseneck hitch is needed to tow any soft of large item such as a horse trailer, farm and industrial equipment, and some fifth wheels. Choosing the right gooseneck and making sure it is properly secured will allow you to have the ultimate towing capability.
